ost ancient artists are anonymous — but look hard enough at how drapery falls or an eye is drawn, and individual painters emerge from the silence. Scholars have reconstructed whole careers for masters we can only call by invented names, like the Berlin Painter, from the vases that survive.
Housed at the Getty Villa among the forms it imitates, this collection rewards that scrutiny: a red-figure cup by Douris, a Roman portrait cut to flatter, Etruscan gold. Attribution is part of the looking here — and, increasingly, so is the argument over what should have left its soil at all.
